The photo-sound project “Beyond Darkness” traces paths in urban surroundings, which are characterized by uncanny situations and moments of lurking insecurity. Various textual information and warning signs testify to the notion of heightened awareness for unexpected things to happen. Danger as an imminent part of public space, especially in metropolitan cities, becomes a topic which has increasingly been dealt with in recent years. Graffiti on the walls pleading to bring American soldiers back to their country reverses the notion of terror coming from the inside to state-supported mechanisms of war. Night-shots of partly invisible, blurred people wandering through the streets, bars and hallways create a story around mystic encounters in media-observed territories. The series poses questions about the routines of daily life and the automatic exposure to surveillance techniques and moments of personal alienation.
Walter Seidl (born 1973) is based in Vienna and works as artist, curator and writer. Various exhibition projects in Europe, Japan, and the U.S. Seidl’s curatorial work has included projects in Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Hong Kong, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia and the U.S. He writes for several international art magazines, such as Camera Austria, contemporary and springerin and is currently building up the art collection of Erste Group.

Das Foto-Sound Projekt “Beyond Darkness” begibt sich auf Spuren in urbanen Kontexten, die von Situationen des Unheimlichen und ständig lauernden Momenten der Unsicherheit gekennzeichnet sind. Zahlreiche textuelle Information und Hinweisschilder kennzeichnen Momente eines gesteigerten Bewusstseins für unerwartete Begebenheiten, die jederzeit eintreten können. Gefahr als konstituierendes Element des öffentlichen Raums, etwa in größeren Metropolen, wurde speziell in den letzten Jahren zu einem zentralen Thema. Graffiti an Straßenmauern, das für die Rückholung amerikanischer Soldaten aus dem Krieg plädiert, kehrt jene Vorstellung um, dass der Terror von innen kommt und lenkt diesen auf staatliche Mechanismen wie etwa Krieg. Nachtaufnahmen von teilweise nicht erkennbaren, verschwommen wiedergegebenen Personen, die durch Straßen, Bars und Gänge ziehen, erzählen eine Geschichte mystischer Begegnungen in medienüberwachten Szenarien. Die dadurch entstehende Fotostrecke stellt Fragen nach Routinevorgängen im täglichen Leben und der Ausgeliefertheit an Überwachungsszenarien und den damit einhergehenden Momenten persönlicher Entfremdung.
